OUR COMMITTEES

CARING COMMUNITY COMMITTEE

Caring Community is dedicated to ensuring that all of our members are recognized, cared for, and given a sense of belonging to the Temple Beth Sholom family. The TBS Caring Community is an outreach group made up of volunteer Temple members and is chaired by a Temple Board member. Information is handled with discretion. Continuity and follow up are stressed. The Chair coordinates the activities of the volunteers of the community regarding support, phone calls, condolences, transportation and financial assistance. In addition, the community, is committed to supporting a variety of worthwhile endeavors that would benefit the Temple Membership at large. The Caring Community Chair receives its notifications from Temple office administrators, the Rabbi, the Cantor, and Board members. We encourage information from all Temple members as well. Feedback from volunteer committee members is reported to the Chair for appropriate intervention. In special situations, we venture out of the Temple community to assist those in the greater community.

PUBLICITY COMMITTEE

The mission of the TBS Publicity Committee is to enhance the image of our institution within the community. This includes the community formed by the Temple members themselves, as well as the members of the larger general community. We raise awareness about events sponsored by the Temple which may be of interest to our members and to society, and facilitate a positive impression of the Temple. We accomplish these objectives by publicizing our social activities, our good deeds, and our spirituality, in as many venues as possible

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

The membership committee inspires Jews to find a lifelong place for themselves within the Temple Beth Sholom community and gives Jews the opportunity to grow their Jewish identity through their affiliation. This committee is the primary group in the congregation that focuses on attracting, recruiting, welcoming, integrating and retaining members. The goal of our Committee is to make Temple membership a meaningful experience for every congregant. We help to make the unique members of our Temple family feel that they belong and we support their growth within our community. We speak personally to prospective members, and provide them with information about our Temple. We invite new and potential members to special events and are visible at countywide programs where we can provide information to prospective members.

FINANCE COMMITTEE

The finance committee helps the treasurer evaluate our financial situation on an ongoing basis. They construct the budget that will be vetted by the board and presented to the congregation at the Congregational meeting.

THE CHOIRS

The only requirement for joining our wonderful Children's Choir and Adult Choir is a love of music and song. Our work not only yields a truly remarkable quality of musicianship, under the excellent guidance of Cantor Anna Zhar, but also creates bonds of friendship and community. Both choirs inspire our congregation during worship, and help in continuing our Jewish musical heritage.

FINE ARTS/BEAUTIFICATION/HOUSE AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE

These committees oversee the appearance of the sanctuary, and the inside and outside of the Temple building. They handle any decorating, designing, remodeling or sprucing up that is needed and oversee the appearance of the building and grounds such as landscaping, driveway, and parking lot making sure that they are appropriately maintained, updated and improved.

RITUAL COMMITTEE

The Ritual Committee is concerned with all aspects of the congregational experience. To maintain and enhance the ritual structure of our congregation, the Ritual Committee interacts with the other arms and committees of the Temple, our clergy, other Temples, and the URJ (the Union for Reform Judaism, the national organization for the Reform Movement). This brings about an integration of concepts and new ideas and experiences, the goal of which is to provide for the most rewarding Reform worship experience possible.

COLLEGE OUTREACH COMMITTEE

The College Outreach Program keeps in touch with our college students, and shares holiday traditions with them while they are away at school. On Chanukah, Purim and Passover, we send fun and meaningful "care packages" to the students, accompanied by a special letter from our Rabbi. Judaic educational opportunities are made available through linking with the Union For Reformed Judaism and their Shamash Program for college students. Seminars for parents and students are given by college advisers, providing valuable information for those temple members who are going through the college search.

EDUCATION (RELIGIOUS SCHOOL) COMMITTEE

Our School Committee represents the general Temple membership in helping to establish educational policy and objectives for the Religious School. We support the efforts of the director and faculty of the Religious School. Our committee helps to develop curriculum goals, assess equipment needs, and serve as a vehicle by which our members can make known their individual needs or problems.

YOUTH COMMITTEE

The Youth Committee supports the efforts of our Youth Group Director, and helps to oversee all youth programs for our 4th through 12th graders. Our committee, which meets several times throughout the year, is the medium by which parents can become involved with our youth program by offering suggestions for programs, volunteering as chaperones for special activities and trips, and assisting at programs and events.

PERSONNEL COMMITTEE

The Personnel Committee is designed to develop procedures that are intended to ensure an equitable and consistent way of staffing, retaining, managing and, where necessary, discipline/termination of employees in our workplace while remaining compliant with Federal, State and Local Laws and Regulations.

SOCIAL ACTION/OUTREACH COMMITTEE

Because we feel that Judaism is not merely a set of beliefs, but a way of life, we believe it is our obligation to repair the world - tikkun olam - and to care for people, especially those least able to care for themselves. To that end, the Social Action/Outreach Committee coordinates and implements a wide variety of programs that benefit not only the Temple community, but also the community at large. We hold an annual blood drive, and our choirs lend their voices throughout the year to special events in the community. We provide special programs for people with special needs. We participate in the "Shabbat Across America" program, and in Mitzvah Days. We conduct an annual Yom Kippur Food Drive, and in one year collected 17,500 pounds of food for People to People.
